About this Session:

About 4 in 10 births in the U.S. are financed through the Medicaid program and these birthing women have a significantly higher risk of severe maternal morbidity and mortality and certain pregnancy risk factors. At a time where our maternal mortality crisis is at its peak, focusing on solutions for this specific population can have positive a impact for all birthing women. Past the federally required coverage through 60 days postpartum, some states choose to end coverage, leaving these women vulnerable at a time of greatest need. Studies show that medicaid expansion is significantly associated with lower maternal mortality rates, but yet this proven solution is not being adopted by all states. Political motivations, systemic racism and broken Medicaid payment models are slowing progress, but our current CMS Administration is pushing forward with an aggressive action plan. Too many preventable deaths have occurred, too many families have suffered, it’s time to act as a unified industry and country.
