Owning the Boardwalk

Speakers:

About this Session:

Welcome to the game of health innovation monopoly. The rules are simple. You start with limited resources, rolling the dice of chance in a system favoring incumbents. Land on an open square? Congratulations, you've found an opportunity to disrupt the status quo - but don't get too comfortable. The big players are watching, ready to acquire or rid any threat to their dominance. Most of the board is already owned by entrenched interests. Patents, regulations, and massive economies of scale form impenetrable barriers to entry. Ideally you could rely on breakthrough research or community support but many promising discoveries are buried or co-opted to protect existing profit models. Public health initiatives are underfunded and outmaneuvered by private interests. This game has been running for decades, consolidating power in fewer and fewer hands. The result? Skyrocketing costs, restricted access, and a system that often prioritizes profits over patients. Is there a way to break the monopoly and truly innovate, or will you be forced to play by their rules? In healthcare, it seems the house always wins.
