November 2023 Global Gathering Event Recap: Leveraging Data-Driven Strategies for Improving Patient Experience

On Nov 16th, 2023, the HealthXL community convened in Princeton, New Jersey. In collaboration with Otsuka, HealthXL organised its fourth Global Gathering of the year around the theme of Leveraging Data-Driven Strategies for Improving Patient Experience.

The event gathered senior leaders from across the pharmaceutical, medtech, and digital health industries, as well as investors and academics. As is typical with our Global Gatherings, the two-part agenda contained thought-provoking presentations from experts and trailblazers in the data-driven patient experience space, before engaging participants in roundtable discussions for the afternoon.

We first heard from Dave Peak (fmr Global Head of Digital Strategy, Partnerships & Innovation) about pursuing an outcome-focused, customer-centric strategy using a common “language” to enable digital health, before learning about the payer perspective on leveraging data to improve patient experience from Michael Munoz (CEO, Ameri Health). Partnership-focused discussions and case studies on “Is Technology the Key Ingredient of Positive Patient Experiences?” were presented by Omri Shor (Founder and CEO, Medisafe) and Bob Gold from Gomo.

Roundtable discussions dominated the afternoon agenda, with conversations focused on  Considerations for the Design and Implementation of Patient Experience Strategies. Four key takeaways emerged from the group discussion :

Data: Gathering data on physiology and mental/emotional well-being, along with patient behaviour and social determinants, gives a more well-rounded view of well-being and can help improve experiences. This comprehensive approach considers all aspects of patient health.

Technology: Strategic use of technology, informed by stakeholder feedback, solves real problems and enhances patient experiences. Data tools like wearables, AI/ML, and personalised apps can play a crucial role in improving outcomes. Common standards across and self-regulation of stakeholder ecosystems ensure effective implementation.

Impact Measures & Outcomes: By collecting patient-reported outcomes, satisfaction scores, and utilisation data, insights into the patient experience and treatment effectiveness are gained. Monitoring clinical outcomes and daily activities guides strategies that prioritise satisfaction, well-being, and healthcare delivery.

Stakeholders: Involving patients, providers, and pharma companies in the design process ensures that strategies address their needs. Consortia, with its focus on self-generating data and advanced analytics, harnesses the power of data for evidence-based decision-making and improved outcomes.

The resounding consensus on the day was that there is a need to shift focus from operational and process/data-driven approaches to measuring true patient outcomes and satisfaction. By pulling data from multiple sources, we can facilitate seamless transitions of care throughout a patient’s journey.

There is hope for successful digital examples in the next two years that can serve as references to secure budget allocation for patient experience initiatives.

Thank you to all HealthXL members and friends who attended the event and contributed their insights and learnings on the day.

See you all in Amsterdam on June 17th, 2024 for our next Global Gathering.
