Google’s foray into healthcare has long been a subject of fascination, but recent developments indicate a shift from mere experimentation to tangible real-world applications. 


The tech giant’s multifaceted approach in healthcare, targeting patients, providers, and enterprises, reflects a strategic alignment with the evolving needs of the industry. Initially focusing on gathering data through both hardware and software, it then transitioned to optimizing processes for healthcare providers and progressively developing search engines tailored for clinics and enterprises to deliver these valuable insights back to them.


  • Data collection through hardware & software - Google’s Health Connect stands as a testament to its commitment to empowering consumers with insights into their healthcare metrics by collecting health information from mobile devices and connected gadgets, and facilitating data exchange among applications via a centralized dashboard. 

  • Utilizing data to streamline clinician workflows - Care Studio  by Google organizes health information of patients, offering clinicians a consolidated view, thereby optimizing their workflows and enhancing the overall experience for both physicians and patients.

  • Delivering data derived insights through tailored search engines - The partnership between Mayo Clinic and Google Cloud, leveraging the Gen AI App Builder for Enterprise Search, exemplifies the company’s efforts to organize healthcare data efficiently and derive actionable insights. Additionally, the introduction of Google Health Data Engine further underscores Google’s dedication to revolutionizing healthcare enterprise solutions.

Building and testing GenAI models for identifying real-world use cases

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Google’s healthcare strategy lies in its recent investment in generative AI. By refining core tools such as traditional search and simultaneously exploring newer technologies like generative AI, Google is poised to transform healthcare delivery.

Last year at Google Health’s Check Up event, the company unveiled Med-PaLM 2, its LLM fine-tuned for healthcare. In December, Google introduced MedLM, a family of foundation models for healthcare built on Med-PaLM 2, and made it more broadly available through Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform. 

Several health systems are testing out the company's LLM models to build solutions for a range of uses, including supporting clinicians’ documentation and streamlining nurse hand-offs, indicating an industry shift. Google's GenAI is being applied in various real-world scenarios, including:

Better clinical conversations - Earlier this year, Google rolled out AMIE (Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer), a research AI system built on an LLM and optimized for diagnostic reasoning and clinical conversations. It is designed and tested to engage in diagnostic conversations with patients, demonstrating a level of reasoning comparable to human doctors.

Better answers to complex diagnostic questions - At HIMSS24, Google announced the launch of MedLM for Chest X-ray, an advanced AI model with the capacity to transform radiology processes. By enhancing the classification of chest X-rays, it aims to assist technicians and physicians in screening and diagnosis for various operational, screening, and diagnostics purposes.

Better access to personal health insights- Last month, Fitbit and Google Research announced their collaboration on the development of a Personal Health Large Language Model (LLM), representing a significant advancement towards personalized health coaching driven by individual data and AI. This collaboration aims to provide Fitbit and Pixel device users with tailored health coaching based on their unique data. The model is currently undergoing refinement to offer personalized coaching features, including actionable messages and guidance, tailored to each user's specific health and fitness goals. This enhancement will enable users to receive more personalized insights, particularly concerning patterns in sleep schedule, exercise intensity, changes in heart rate variability, resting heart rate, and other relevant metrics.

This initiative will not only benefit patients by offering tailored insights but also provide invaluable data for providers and enterprises to improve treatments and understand user behavior. It’s a convergence of Google’s three-pronged approach, promising to reshape the landscape of healthcare.

As Google continues to blur the lines between experimentation and implementation in the healthcare and GenAI space, the industry eagerly awaits what’s next. With its innovative spirit and technological prowess, Google is poised to redefine the future of healthcare, one AI model at a time.
