CareMessage Unveils AI Assistant to Address Health Equity Gaps

CareMessage, a patient activation platform focused on underserved communities, has launched its AI Assistant, designed to interpret and analyze patient responses, turning them into structured data to better address needs like food insecurity and transportation barriers. This AI tool not only helps overcome communication barriers but also aims to reduce patient no-show rates, potentially saving customers money.


Targeted at safety-net organizations working on health equity, the AI Assistant was developed after rigorous testing on multiple large language models (LLMs), with Google Gemini being selected for its accuracy and ease of use. Google Gemini, part of Google's AI ecosystem, supports models and tools that work with language, images, audio, video, and code.


CareMessage co-developed and tested the AI Assistant with select customers, focusing on addressing specific needs, minimizing biases, and ensuring robust validation and safety. Now part of CareMessage's patient engagement initiative, the AI tools support 20 million patients across 40+ safety-net organizations.


Cecilia Corral, CareMessage cofounder and chief strategy officer, explained that the AI was created to address the barriers patients face when attempting to communicate with providers. She emphasized that the technology empowers safety-net organizations by improving patient interactions at scale while maintaining control over critical decisions through safeguards.


This launch builds on CareMessage’s broader health equity efforts, including the introduction of Automated Gaps-in-Care in September to streamline care coordination and enhance clinical outcomes. Additionally, the company established the 2024 CareMessage Impact Fund, supported by major contributors like Johnson & Johnson, Dovetail Impact Foundation, and Sanofi, with a lead contribution of $1.25 million. CareMessage has previously received significant grants, including $6 million in 2015 from organizations such as Google and The Pershing Foundation.
