Oracle Announces New AI-Powered Electronic Health Record

Oracle introduced a new electronic health record (EHR) system on Tuesday, marking its most significant healthcare product update since acquiring Cerner for $28 billion in 2022.

An EHR is a digital patient medical record updated by clinicians over time. Oracle’s new EHR integrates cloud and AI technology, eliminating menus and drop-downs and allowing doctors to retrieve information using voice commands. This setup aims to reduce time spent searching records, enabling doctors to focus more on patient care.

“This isn’t just a scribe or assistant—it’s like having your own resident,” said Seema Verma, Oracle’s EVP of Health and Life Sciences.

Oracle’s new EHR could help boost its position in the competitive EHR market, where it has recently struggled. Oracle reported its largest hospital client loss in 2023, while its main competitor, Epic Systems, saw a net gain.

Developed independently of Cerner’s system, Oracle’s EHR requires current Cerner customers to consider migrating. The platform offers an AI-powered interface where doctors can use voice prompts to manage schedules, pull up patient histories, and access AI summaries and original records for further detail.

Since its acquisition, Oracle has also introduced new features for existing Cerner users, including the Oracle Health Clinical AI Agent, which automates documentation, and an app-based version for easy access. An early adopter program for the new EHR begins next year, and Oracle is helping clients migrate to the cloud, which should streamline implementation.

“We see it as disruptive to the market,” Verma added. “This EHR is designed to solve longstanding healthcare issues.”
